How do I turn off McAfee to install a program?

Jump to solution

I'm familiar with Macx but a blithering idiot on a PC.  My wife needs me to install Quickbooks and I can't figure out how to turn off McAfee to do so.  I keep trying things on the Security Center but they don't seem to cover this.  I don't know where help files are.

As an added twist, ttion Status/Am I Protecroteche Security Center says my protection has lapsed (though my account is up to date till next April).  Still, I don't want to mess things up big time when I have no clue how to fix them.  Security Center/ Home/ Am I Protected/  shows: No. Part of your protection must be fixed.

Without knowing which parts are inactive I hesitate to cause problems.

Thanks In Advance,

Jim

Systemguards shouldn't even exist...what version do you have?   Shield icon or square in the taskbar?

Normally to install a program all you need to do is turn off antivirus....or so I've learned.

Systemguards have been replaced in 2010 by Access Protection and you only need to disable that when messing with the registry.

Yes they take effect immediately.

The instructions vary depending on whether or not you have last year's version (square taskbar icon) or theis years's version (shield icon)

2009 version:

Double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center

Click Advanced Menu (bottom left)

Click Configure (left)

Click Computer & Files (top left)

You can disable VirusScan in the right-hand module and tell it for how long.

2010 version:

Double-click the taskbar icon to open SecurityCenter

Click Virus and Spyware Protection

Click Real Time Protection

Click the Turn Off button and tell it for how long to stay that way.

You shouldn't need to turn off anything else but VirusScan.

Wouldn't I need to disable SystemGuards also?

Thanks,

There is a square in the taskbar, it should be 2008 or 2009—  I don't know how they do their updates.

Thanks, everything seems to be working now, I have the program installed and my protection is back in place.

Howeber, in the Security Center I get a notice that a problem needs to be fixed.  When I click on the Fix link, something runs then stops, and the notice is still there.  Two items are listed that need fixing:  My Computer and its Files and Internet and Instant Messaging.  I have not found any buttons or settings to change these messages.  My coverage shows as up to date until Oct. 19, 2011.  Any clue what these mean?

Thanks again,

Jim

Okay, I might have clarity—

I had not noticed the popup that said to restart.  Now I get a shield in the taskbar instead of a square, and everything seems copasetic as far as protections.  Thanks so much for all your assistance!

Jim

PS:  Half of my grandparents were former Brits.  I tell my Spanish wife that accounts for my preference for boiled foods  ;—)

...I don't really care as long as it's good food...LOL

That is good that it's working again and it looks like you've got the upgrade to the latest version.
