I've been using McAfee SecurityCenter for quite some time. A few days ago, the program updated, and since then I've been having problems. I'm not sure what update it was or what version I was using (it's uninstalled now), but it had a fancy new look, if that helps.
The problem is that I can't connect to most websites now. I can connect to google and any sites within google (gmail, etc.), as well as a couple other sites (such as the State of Illinois site). But when I try to connect to any other site (including McAfee), the browser just says "Waiting for (site)" and eventually times out. This happens with both Firefox and IE.
I've uninstalled McAfee, and now everything works fine. I've reinstalled SecurityCenter a few times but still get the same problem every time. I've also tried turning off the firewall but that doesn't help. When I do a system restore to a point before the update everything works fine.
I feel like I may be missing something simple, but I just can't figure it out. I'd like to keep using McAfee, so as a last ditch effort I figured I'd post my problem here.
BTW, I'm using Windows XP SP3 and the latest versions of Firefox and IE.

This look is becasue of the new interface of your mcafee software. The version of your mcafee software is been upgraded and enhanced.Please check the following so that we could diagnose why you are unable to connect with websites .
1. Click start – click run and then type drivers
Open the folder “etc” -> open the file hosts“ with a notepad
Check whether the last line in the notepad is 127.0.0.1 and anything below this can be deleted.
2. Click start – click run and type cmd
In the command prompt window type ping download.mcafee.com and check whether you get a valid reply (and not 127.0.0.1)
Kindly check the same and get back to us so that we could proceed further .

There was nothing else in the host file besides 127.0.0.1.
And I got a valid reply from the ping.
This is without Security Center installed. Do I need to do the same steps with it installed?

I just reinstalled SecurityCenter again, hoping the problem had been fixed in an update. But it wasn't.
What's the deal? Is there a way to go back to the old (working) version?
Could you please confirm whether this happens with any particular browser ?
Have you tried connecting to McAfee websites with a different browser like (Mozila firefox,Chrome)
Also try connecting with any other antivirus websites and let me know the status.
