Failed authentication caused by X509N

Hi Gents

We can see Kerberos authentication failures (event id:4768) generated by accounts with namening convention like X509N:<S>CN=<host.domain>
Important notice is that we do not use such accounts therefore I would like to ask how to interpret such events? By what activities it is triggered and how we can tackle this issue in order to fix failed authentication.

Thanks a lot for any help.

Re: Failed authentication caused by X509N

My research indicates these are authentication attempts on behalf of a certificate which is not mapped to a user account.

Reports vary as to sources - sometimes it's a misconfigured backup DC, sometimes a management service.

I recommend tracking these back to the computer originating them and identifying the process using something like process monitor.
