Office 365 update blocked by firewall

Microsoft Office 365 usually updates without any problem, but since the last McAfee update I get an error code that indicates that the update is being blocked by my firewall or antiviral software.

Microsoft suggests turning the firewall and/or antivirus off while updating.  Is this safe? Or is there an alternative?

My product is McAfee Internet Security on active subscription.

The problem has now resolved, possibly due to a subsequent Windows and/or McAfee update.
