RE: windows security virus

It would help if you posted more details as in.....

Please include the following information:

What is your operating system, service pack and are you up to date with Microsoft update? There are two ways of checking this. Go to Start/Run and type in winver then click the Enter key. Or, right-click My Computer in the Start Menu or on your desktop (or Computer in Vista) and select Properties.
Post what it says.

What McAfee products do you have? If your taskbar icon is like this: - double-click to open SecurityCenter and then click "View Details" or "About" at the lower right of the new window. Post the details from each module.

Try scanning with the free versions of these two tools and let them clean anything they find, update them before running:

Thaks for your response. I have windows xp, service pack 3, 1.24 gb, 1.40 GHz. virus prevents reinstalling mcAfee security from Comcast,, so I cannot access anything from McAfee. must remove virus first, from McAfee help center.

RE: windows security virus

Try uploading Malwarebytes in Safe Mode with Networking (tap F8 repeatedly while booting up) and running it in that mode.

RE: windows security virus

Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking" which is basically Safe Mode with internet access by rebooting and tapping F8 repeatedly. A menu should appear and that will be one of the choices.

That mode usually stops malware from running while allowing Malwarebytes, which I linked earlier, to be downloaded and run.

RE: windows security virus

have done both - still cannot install McAfee security - virus from windows security still there, apparently

RE: windows security virus

Are you sure this is a virus or other infection and not another anti-virus application that you may have installed?

If it is still an infection probably best to do the following:

For stubborn infections that nothing seems to budge try using an application called "Hijackthis" and posting its log on one of the forums below. They will check it and help you get rid of whatever ails your machine.

DOWNLOAD HIJACKTHIS

Do not post the log here, we can't help!

Post the logs at a specialist Forum:
