possible unwanted program

As I don't seem to be able to locate any discussions on this subject (and I know that there is at least one), I would like to start one.

Recently my McAfee protection has been bringing up a notice on my screen about a possible unwanted program (PUP): ADWARE-BPROTECT

The notice comes up regularly, like every 15 seconds for ~ 3 x and then it stops for a while, then resumes this notification. The choices it gives me is "delete", "accept" and "cancel"

I have chosen each choice over the last few weeks and still the notice comes up on my screen. It is getting very annoying.

It appears that McAfee has quarantined it but when I chose "delete", it doesn't seen to be able to delete the program. OR somehow the program is getting reloaded without my knowing it.

In any case, I don't want the damn program and want some way to permanently get rid of it.

I have also gone to Control panel/delete program but I can't find this thing. I am operating Win 8.1.

Any ideas?

Re: possible unwanted program

Moved this to Malware Discussion > Home User Assistance.

Adware-Bprotect is a PUP (a "Possibly Unwanted Program"), not a virus or trojan according to the McAfee page about it HERE.  Locate it in your Quarantine folders by opening SecurityCenter, click Navigation, then scroll down to  Quarantined and Trusted Items  and it should be in one of those sections and that should indicate the path it came from which might give you a clue as to what is causing the detection.

Probably some software you have installed or something connected with your machine is the culprit.   Also check your browsers for unwanted add-ons, toolbars and suchlike and get rid of whatever you don't need, also check your Program list in Control Panel for the same.

Try running Stinger and perhaps also Malwarebytes Free, see the last link in my signature below.

Re: possible unwanted program

Hi ,

Does this happen after a McAfee Update and/or while Browsing / downloading files from the Internet?

Re: possible unwanted program

This one has been around for a while. It's been reported here, at least four times - see, for instance,

McAfee recognises it as a PUP and knows of 3 variants (at the last count) but the one you have could of course be a new variant.

Look for any extensions or add-ons in your browsers where the first part of the name is "Browser" - Browser Protector, Browser Manager - and uninstall them.

Malwarebytes is said to be very strict with PUPs and should be able to get rid of this one if McAfee has a problem with removing it.

Re: possible unwanted program

First before you install antivirus in computer you research more for what is the best antivirus today, ask some forum site if they already used that kind of software and learn from their feedback. Choosing antivirus to protect us from virus is not easy. I'm using mcafee and I enjoy my anitivirus maybe it's matter of the system or specs of your PC. Read this for more info: How to choose the best antivirus for my computer.
