I have been infested with the above on my laptop McAfee Total protection did NOT catch it.
Searcing on the net I find this stuff is considered "malware". I am on my PC.
Does McAfee offer a "fix/removal" that I can apply externally to my laptop as I can do nothing with my laptop except turn it on and "agree" to download the unwanted software.
A quik reply will be appreciated.
Moved this to Malware Discussion > Home User Assistance.
Unfortunately these rogue anti-spyware pests often elude antivirus software because of the way they act, relying on some action by the recipient to activate, even trying to close a window can activate it.
You could try Stinger followed by Malwarebytes Free both linked in my signature's last link below.
There is also an excellent removal guide here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/windows-virtual-security-removal
The first thing to try though would be System Restore to before this hit. If you can't access it in regular mode it can be accessed in Safe Mode if necessary.
Thanks much for the reply. I feel like an idiot after twenty years I got tagged.
I can't prove it BUT I think this thing came from a site with the green check-mark?
I requested some info from the site and when I opened their reply I started having problems.
If all doesn't work I "suppose" my only alternative is f-disk and reinstall?
I hope it wont come to that. Try the tools and follow that tutorial at BleepingComputer. Those guys are good and it should work.
Regarding the green site, if you know the URL it should be reported to email@example.com if possible.
If it's any consolation I nearly got caught by a similar thing but managed to avoid it by immediately powering off.
