Widows XP updates fail to install

Jump to solution

Hi,

I'm a Mcafee Secruity Center customer and have been for over 9yrs. Despite this I've had several virus/malware computer issues. Here's my latest which also seems to be a virus.

When I try to install the windows update it fails with the following popup message:

"The following updates were not installed: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)"

I've tried to turning off all McAfee security settings, but it still fails to install. Coincidently, I'm also getting several Outlook Express notices of bounced emails to unknown addresses not in my address book. Many of them are in china. ie: hongkong.com

Please advise,

Wazoomr

In addition to Ron's good suggestion, please try the steps below:

Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below
Click Start,  click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following commands. Press  ENTER after each command.
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32  wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32  wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Attempt to run  Windows Update

If it still won't install, please try downloading the full manual installer of the update, then run the installer. Here's the link. (Since you didn't give us the operating system on your machine, you'll need to identify the specific download you need.):

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms09-061.mspx

In some cases, if it still won't install correctly, then uninstall NET Framework 1.1 SP1 from your computer, then download the manual installer and reinstall everything in order.

After uninstalling the old, then first install the NET Framework 1.1 redistributable from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displa...

Next, download and install the SP1 package from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8f5654f-088e-40b2-bbdb-a83353618b38&displa...

And finally, install the recent update using the link I posted earlier

Hope this helps.

HI Grif,

Thanks very much for providing a solution that worked. I was able to install the latest update from msft updates page. One thing that may help others in the future is to let them know they don't have to install all of the .net updates in order beginning with the first. You just need to run the install of the latest one which was on you PC before, or even better, simply run the latest update posted.

Great job, and thanks again for the quick reply with the right solution.
