System will not update

I've run all the diagnostics - used the virtual technician...uninstalled and reinstalled. And it keeps getting to the same point and stopping. As of yesterday the system had been current...today it tells me the detection files are over 30 days old some components are missing. My last update was Monday 5/18/09 and it reported everything in the green.

I also run a malware program - SpyDoctor - that shows I have Trojan.TDSServ and I can't get it off the system. I've tried the program and a manual deletion of the values...but no luck.

Now my Yahoo pages keep popping up with a security warning on every trusted page...I've got a loaded .45 at the ready - so please help before the hard drive becomes a target!

I googled 'SpyDoctor' and it seems it is rogue security software. (Is the name really SpyDoctor, not Spyware Doctor ?)

Assuming this is the case, you should remove it as soon as possible from your system.
If you have never heard of rogue security software, I suggest you check this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_software

Removing may be difficult ! That is often the case with rogues, but not always.

You may want to get 'expert' help, even if it seems you have uninstalled it there may be stuff left behind that you don't want.

This website is one of those sites for 'expert' help. Probably better to have your computer cleaned by 'experts' if your system contains critical/important data, although you may be able to back up your data (and don't forget to scan the backup to avoid infection after cleaning).

NOTE: I have read that the SpyDoctor hides in Windows system restore (not sure if it's true). It's difficult or impossible to remove infections from system restore, so you may want to disable Windows system restore (at least till you're done cleaning), but disabling system restore (removes the previous restore points) is not without risk.

If you want to do it yourself: run free MBAM (possibly in safe mode, see the instructions), free SAS.

Supposedly MBAM is good at removing rogue software.

Spyware Doctor

You are correct...It was late and I mistyped the name it is SpyWare Doctor. I got it through the PC magazine website. I keep my McAfee updated and run it constantly - but this Trojan seems to have slipped through. I'll take your recommendation and see about having the system cleaned by an expert - rather than a .45 :rolleyes:

Maybe you won't have to spend the money. I suspect that the Spyware Doctor and McAfee clash. The Spyware Doctor may still get good reviews, but it was a disaster when they released version 5. So I decided to drop the program. While I'm not familiar with the latest version, I would suggest uninstalling the Spyware Doctor. If they have an uninstaller tool I suggest you use it.

Maybe the 'trojan' is a false positive.

After uninstalling the Spyware Doctor, I suggest you run some scans.
I doesn't hurt to delete the temporary files, best to remove leftovers.

Free MBAM and SAS, followed up by an online scan by Kaspersky, and/or Avira or another reputable AV. You may have to disable real-time protection by McAfee. If they don't find anything, it's probably a false positive - there is a way to report it but I don't know how - see elsewhere on this forum.
You can also try VIPRE or Counterspy from Sunbelt Software, fully functioning trial.

Then I suggest you uninstall McAfee, using the MCPR tool plus instructions (see forum), and reinstall from your online account. You can scan again to see if you get that detection of a trojan. If not, you're clear.

This may be cheaper than consulting an expert - unless it's for free.

Btw, I consider the Spyware Doctor junk. A long time ago it was good, but not since version 5 came out.

Just for the record - so you can use this for future fixes. I uninstalled the Spyware Doctor as you suggested...and as it turns out, I still had an old copy of SpyBot on the system that I thought I had gotten rid of a while a go. I uninstalled that as well. I searched through and made sure there was no other anti-spyware on the system - then uninstalled the McAfee software. After using a disc cleaning utility and rebooting the system. I went back to the ATT website and reloaded the McAfee system....rescan found the trojan...it was zapped and removed and all seems to be well. (For now wink )

I'm sure there are some creeps out there just waiting to pounce and irritate me with more...in the mean time - thanks for the help!

PS: never could get the Kaspersky site to work. It kept telling me that it was unable to upload the proper updates. I have the most recent version of Java (after it asked) and then it started loading it's own system and just stopped short of a scan. No response after 3 days to my inquiries.
