I am new to computers. I send emails and use Facebook, that's it. Suddenly an icon of a black dog appeared at the bottom of my screen and it says "System Guard". When I click on it - it says "Disable Alerts", "Allow All For One Minute", "Block All For One Minute", and "Shut Down System Guard".
I clicked on "Shut Down System Guard" and then I ran McAfee which showed nothing.
I ran Hitman Pro which said: No Threats Found AND Threats Detected 1229 (have no clue what this means!)
I ran VIPRERescue and it said: 1 Threat Traces Detected (Trojan.win32, Basine, d<v>)
then it said: Clean Completed
I did not install this System Guard, I have no idea what it is and I can't find any info here as to whether it's supposed to be there or is it a trojan/virus. After running the above scans, I restarted my computer and the System Guard (dog) icon is there again! Please help!
You posted to a 5 year old thread so I gave you your own and new title.
I don't know what operating system you have but can't you start System Restore to go back to ebfore it started?
Antiviruses aren't too goo generall at catching this sort of thing which usually involves the user clicking on something to initiate it.
Check the last link in my signature blow and try running Stinger and Malwarebytes Free as suggested there.
Also see this Google search result and click any of the "BleepingComputer" links there as they have excellent removal guides.
Good call. I hadn't thought of that. There's one way to find out : can Sharon R please view the screenshots in these two links and tell us which one(s) she recognises.
The System Guard dog icon doesn't look like either of those.
Here is a screenshot of my sceen when I click on the black dog icon. And below that is a screenshot of the black dog icon close up.

Yes!!!!!!!! I found it, too! I had looked through the Iolo system mechanic screens but just missed it! I even emailed their tech support and haven't heard back from them! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!
You should get rid of it, it isn't compatible with McAfee and most other antivirus software. Plus it's a complete waste of money if you bought it. Registry cleaners, no matter what they come disguised as, are a total waste of time and often wreck a perfectly good system.
Should I get rid of the entire Iolo system mechanic or just the System Guard? I read somewhere here that McAfee is NOT an antivirus scanner. It does NOT search for viruses. It only evaluates if you have proper anti-virus protection installed and then recommends what you should get. Is that true?
I have had McAfee for years and I keep getting viruses constantly - lost the entire system once!!! McAfee doesn't seem to do a thing! I have now downloaded Hitman Pro, VIPRERescue, Iolo system mechanic and ESET (but it won't run along with the others).
What should I keep to protect my computer the best possible way. "I know, my son says GET AN APPLE COMPUTER!" Well I can't afford that, so what are my best choices?
I am so frustrated and about to throw my PC out of the window!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
