We keep getting a window popping up that says we have a problem with Microsoft Windows. Says a virus had taken over and will be sharing all of our data. Need to call this phone number...etc. It freezes the computer. I do a CTRL ALT DEL and shutdown all apps. I know this is a scam, but how to find and kill this malware? McAfee does not find it.
We are on Windows 10 with a desktop computer that is about 1 year old. I am using Google Chrome browser.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Load and run Getsusp that will find files Mcafee does not recognise and help them provide removal. add your email to the program's preferences.
Then try Malwarebytes do not accept the free trial let it change in 2 weeks to a manual scanner. Note the full version that gets sometimes installed can clash with Mcafee so I disable the real time scanning features. This stops any clashing till the 2 weeks is past. This is a new feature previously one could install the manual free scanner without having to accept the premium trial.
There are some other scanner you can try as well
Thanks catdaddy. I did the scans and they found Win32/FakeOptimier!Ep. The scan cleaned the file. Checked with other scans and removers and it appears to be gone. Then I reset the browser settings. Will see how it works moving forward.
Glad that all is okay now My Colleague Peacekeeper gave some good advice also.Keep that link he inserted as it contains some Superb tools. You can run Zemana or Malwarebytes as a second opinion On demand scanner periodically.
All the Best
