Persistent popup from "Spyware Protect 2009"

I've been looking for a McAfee solution to this trojan/virus that my son downloaded from a game site inadvertently tonight. It's taking over 50% of my system resources, popping up error messages every 15 seconds. While I get hundreds of hits on this text with a google search, I was hoping for an easy fix from McAfee for their customers. Any advice on this--where can I turn to get this gone?

RE: Persistent popup from "Spyware Protect 2009"

McAfee VirusScan like many other anti-virus applications isn't too good at removing certain things particularly rogue anti-malware applications such as this.

Definitive removal instructions here:

Scroll down the page and read it all first. Don't click the first thing you see as there are ads at the top of that page.

Great referral--follow-up question

Given your comment on the problems with McAfee getting rid of these types of programs, I am thinking about buying the MalwareByte anti-malware product they recommend to prevent future downloads like this. Would running this create any conflicts with my McAfee security software running at the same time? I am VERY grateful to find a resource like this forum and for these questions. Thanks to any and all that assist.

RE: Great referral--follow-up question

If it has active protection it could clash with VirusScan. That's why we recommend its use only on a temporary basis. SuperAntispyware free is a good one to keep around:

Just update it occasionally.

Thank you!!!!

It's gone! You people are awesome--thank God there are as many volunteers working against this kind of activity as working to create the pests. Your time and expertise made a tremendous difference in our household. Have a great weekend:)
