Nuwar vsarint as Flash update ?

I got a virus McAfee inentified as w23/Nuwar@mm when I clicked to update Macromedia Flash while trying to view a video. I managed to get rid of most of it, but it trashed my video display.
I had files "... /local settings/temo/winlogon" and files names wpx18.cpx, wpx30.cpx and wpx66.cpx in the "windows/system32" folder. It also replaced my wallpaper with a file called "DC9.scr", a joke blue screen. The remaining problem is that I have lost tabs in "Dispay Properties"! I run WinXP.
I used "last best", reinstalled my Nvidia display driver and ran "sfc /scannow".
How can I fix my "Display Properties"???
Thanks ... Jim

Nuwar varint (wpx18.cpx) as Flash update ?

Thank you for moving my post. I was unable to create a new thread myself!

Is there a trick to posting links?

After a lot of reflection, I came to the conclusion that the "virus" must have twiddled with the Win file(s) that controlled display of the "Display Properties", I hate unscrambling things after a system restore! The Microsoft KB was no help!

I Googled a bit and found a solution. I looked up the registry entry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

and deleted the keys "NoDispBackgroundPage" and "NoDispScrSavPage", and voila! ... all fixed ... ... !

As far as I can tell, the virus/trojan hasn't left behind any other lint? If you are aware of any other housekeeping that should be done, please let me know? My latest HiJackThis log is appended.

My reference was:

Nuwar varint (wpx18.cpx) as Flash update ?

Epilogue ...

If someone smarter than I would like to investigate the source of the virus/trojan I caught, go to:
link removed for safety

or
link removed for safety

If one clicks on the vodeo, as the video asks, one gets sent to:
link removed for safety

or
link removed for safety

The user may be asked to download and save an active-x object!

I can avoid the infection with Firefox, but when I used Internet Explorer, it crept right in!

I hope some virus/trojan killer can use this information to save some other poor fool from having his system trashed!

Thanks again.

Best regards,
Jim

There might be some lint left behind that I missed. If so, PLEASE reply with instructions for cleanup housekeeping? Just in case ... my HiJackThis log follows in next reply.

RE: Nuwar vsarint as Flash update ?

I would also add that you are operating an unsafe system to start with. XP SP1 is not supported by Microsoft for security updates, and hasn't been since October 2006.

You should update to SP3 and IE7 a.s.a.p. Help here: http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=220807
