McAfee-GW Edition

Dear users,
I ran a free online McAfee scan which DID NOT yield malware for a file. Later a ran the same file with VIRUS TOTAL and it's McAfee-GW edition reports the following:
McAfee-GW-Edition 6.7.6 2009.05.09 Worm.Win32.Malware.gen!88 (suspicious)

I really don't know what to do and would appreciate your feedback.

RE: McAfee-GW Edition

McAfee-GW-Edition is the new McAfee Gateway appliance that was formally "Webwasher". The detection functions of this product and VirusScan are not yet synchronized (and might not be for compatibility reasons).

The detection on VirusTotal is a heuristic detection so it could be a false positive. It also could have gotten it right and that is some new malware. Chances are some other scanners on VT would flag the file too.

If you suspect a file is a virus that is not detected by McAfee, please submit a sample as instructed here: http://vil.nai.com/vil/submit-sample.aspx.

This will allow McAfee to add or fix the detection in the future.

Note: McAfee AVERT will get a copy of all flagged malware sent to VT, but direct submission may be faster.

Re: RE: McAfee-GW Edition

I think the point is that one McAfee product detects malware, the information needs to be across all their products.  Right now I have a situation where 26 popular AV products detect malware I discovered on one of our devices, yet VirusScan does not.  It makes me wonder what I am paying for.
