I've ended up with adware / malware which is launching 'http://s.ptrk-wn.com/load' - how do I remove this from my browsers as McAfee isn't detecting it

Jump to solution

I ended up inadvertently downloading this adware / malware. I think I picked it up from trying to download a copy of a disk tester (as I'd just lost all my data on a portable drive). However, the 'software' looks like it has come with this adware / malware that I can't seem to get rid of from my browsers and McAfee doesn't appear to be picking it up. Anyone got some ideas please as I really don't want to have to build the laptop back from scratch if I can avoid it. Thanks - Graham

This a recent detection as far as google implies I would use the free scanners in the link below

first run getsusp and add your email address to the preferences this will pass any unknown file detections to Mcafee.

then run malwarebytes free not the trial and adwcleaner for a start.

Is this on windows?

Google says there are some removal tools but they are not on the usual sites we recommend so use with care.

Hi Peacekeeper - thanks for the reply. Yes this is on Windows and appears to have gone to IE / Chrome / Firefox browsers. I've had a look around on Google and there are some 'claims' to have removal tools but when I read the explanation of what they are asking you to do it seems way too vague to me...and of course they also offer a link (but my concern is that the link is itself malware). Let's try the scanner link you suggest and see how we get on. Thanks

The Superb Tools that colleague Peacekeeper suggested to use, are highly recommended and proven to be Reputable/Reliable. I would add to that list (Junkware Removal Tool). It can be found with-in the same Link he provided.

His advice to be "Wary" of some of the other Removal Guides/Tools is well placed. Especially when it comes to using (SpyHunter). In my personal opinion, avoid using this particular Tool at all costs. It basically scans your computer for Malware/Spyware etc, however anything it detects requires you to purchase the software in order to remove said infections.

So having said this...Simply follow PK advice and you should be okay. I might add that you can keep the Malwarebytes (Free) Version onboard as a compliment to your McAfee Protection. It is a excellent (On Demand Scanner). Simply update before each scan, and proceed.

To keep it (Free) DO NOT accept or enable any Free Trial Offers/or activate the Paid/Pro Version, all throughout the Download/Installation process. Activating the (Pro) Version will enable the (RTS) module, and could possibly cause Conflicts. The (Free) Version will suffice.

All the very Best,

Thanks Peacekeeper for the good advice. I've downloaded and run the Malwarebytes free as well as the adwcleaner. I thought it had got everything but I do still seem to be popping the occasional window now (appears to be linked to anything using JS as far as I can see) but it is not as bad as it was - at least now my laptop is useable whereas before it was completely stuffed. So will continue to run periodically and no doubt McAfee will pick up at some point and quarantine / remove I hope. But thanks for your help

You are quite welcome   As that is why we Volunteer our time, to assist our users the best we possibly can. May I ask if when Looking in your Control Panel/Browser Add-ons, do you see (OmigaPlus.Babylon Toolabar)?

The reason I primarily ask, is there is a Removal Guide by Malwaretips, that basically uses the identical tools PK suggested. However, it recommends running the (Junkware Removal Tool/as well as (Hitman Pro). It may be that in order to entirely remove all of the "Bundled Nasties" You may have to revert back to the nearest Restore Point before you received this infection (s)

Of course should that be the case, making certain you are current/up to date with Windows, to include Internet Explorer and of course McAfee.

You may find the following two articles most informing, as how these PUPS arrived on your system:

Wishing you all the very best
