Is there a link I'm just not finding? Not too long ago, I did find a user with the exact same problem, same paths, etc..And of course nobody had responded to her.
My situation is this. Obviously I or someone in my family downloaded something to bring this on:
My browsers keep getting Pop ups is getting worse as time goes on. This is ultimately choking my browser and sends it crashing. I run McAfee finds: the 2 "Potentially Unwanted Programs" I quarentine and remove them, but states they cannot be completely removed. Restart...still there. Run SuperAntiSpyware....finds differing threats every time. I remove. Everything remains the same and locked in this unending cycle. I've followed the programs path and at some point the folder is simply empty and dead ends. I've sent McAfee the findings via the Security Center (of which I'm an owner). This is different however from their request to send a file of 3MB or less containg the file. I can't send a file since the path "Dead Ends" I have no file to send. This is all quite stressful and have no idea where to begin for true help. My subscription seems really useless right now, and getting any help from them also seems to be hit or miss. any direction would be much appreciated. Thanks in Advance!
PS- I didn't give too much tech/spec info as I didn't want to litter the page with unneccessary confusion.
I can tell you I am running Vista and the most current versions of Firefox and IE8.
As they are coming back they could be in the system restore files. Maybe a thought is if this is the case you disable system restore, reboot and run virusscan and see if they are redetected. If ok reenable system restore.
Just a thought
Hello, I just ran my weekly scan and got warning "Generic PUP xlcy" found which needs attention. I could delete it from the scan menu and searched in Google and McAfee service center in order to get more info re this Trojan?
By making an acct for Communities I read your problem and it gives me shivers because I now doubt whether this problem is really solved.
I wonder if you go to "system repair" and restore and take an earlier date, it may neglect the virus.
Sorry, but I am Dutch (and blond) so it is difficult for me use the right words. Good luck
Apologies for the persistence of the issue you are having. we will help you in any way we can.
The detection Generic PUP.z!br and Generic PUP xlcy are generally given for files which are classified as Potentially Unwanted Programs.
Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) are not virus/trojan because they do not self replicate. They could be commercial products or any piece of software which a reasonably security-or privacy-minded computer user may want to be informed of.
We call a file or a program as Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) because we think that the program/file could be used for malicious purposes as well, although it is not necessary always and could be a legitimate application/program. You could go ahead and delete the file manually which is getting detected as Generic PUP.z!br or Generic PUP.x!cy if you are not using that appliaction/program.
Upon following your links, it just takes me back to the begining where I DO scan and it Does find the PUP, but say's it can't completely remove the program. The path is useless as it ends in a non-existant folder, so I can't manually remove it anyhow....I have the most current McAfee Security Center for home, with my renewal coming at the end of the month. Is McAfee Antivirus Plus a seperate program from what I already have? Is this basically what I need to remove this? It is very frustrating in that I thought the Security Center served this purpose. Unfortunately the instructions in the links are for programs (Enterprise, etc..) I don't have and don't appear to be free tools. Am I totally missing something I should have access to?
Thanks for sticking with me on this...I'll tell you what I've done up to this point:
I went into Control paanel and turned off the System Restore. Restarted the Computer. Ran a full Scan via my Security Center. 1 item detected. The same PuP's as mentioned above. I removed them. status says "cannot completely remove." Restared.....And here I am still at the same point. One thing, I don't know if it makes a difference at this point, is I still have the "System Restore" disabled. The path I was talking about and followed again under the disabling (still the same), was:
I find the path always dead ends after "windows" with no lead into temporaryinternet files. Non-existent! Again my system restore is still disabled. Should I have done anything different?
If you use Internet explorer delete all temp ifiles and cache .
In IE go to tools/internet options/browsing history and delete button and choose to delete temp internet files files and cookies
Close IE and reboot and scan again.
I also use Firefox (my wife uses IE, though..) as my default browser, if that changes anything up? Anything I should do there?
