Generic Downloader.x

Hi, I'm new to this forum but joined because I'm having a problem - yesterday McAfee detected a trojan - Generic Downloader.x and said it had removed it, but today when i switched the computer on it was there again. So again, McAfee said it removed it but it turned up again!! Also, after a while, my internet also shuts down. I can't seem to figure out where I got this from, as I don't download from dodgy sites and use McAfee SiteAdvisor. I have McAfee Security Center and scanned in Safe Mode, it found 3 items and quarantined them. Also, in task manager I have noticed the file 4m0olmxu.exe but cannot find any information on this. I terminate the process when its running, and my internet doesn't shut down. I performed a scan on MalwareBytes and it found two malicious items and quarantined them, yet that process keeps coming back on task manager. I can't seem to get rid of this virus!! I also tried the free scanning tool online but that found nothing wrong!!
Can anyone help me pleeeeeeeeeease?
Thank you in advance!!

RE: Generic Downloader.x

Neha, what is your operating system and service pack and are you up to date?

If you have Windows Me, XP or Vista please try disabling System Restore and then re-scanning.

You could also try scanning using the free version of this tool: http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

I tried disabling system restore and scanning in Safe Mode as I said, and McAfee did find 3 items and quarantined them but when I restarted my computer the virus was back there!!! My operating system is Windows XP. I will try the link you gave me and post a reply. P.s. I have service pack 3 on here and update frequently.

RE: Generic Downloader.x

What service pack does your XP have? At least SP2 I hope. Help with that here: http://community.mcafee.com/showthread.php?t=220807
Worry about that after the infection is gone.

If the above tool doesn't help then use Hijackthis and post its log on one of the following forums for expert advice:

Do not post the log here, we can't help!

RE: Generic Downloader.x

I have Service Pack 3 on here. Okay, I did the scan and it didn't find anything major - it found ten tracking cookies? In that case, shall I post a log of HijackThis on one of the sites listed above?

RE: Generic Downloader.x

Tracking cookies are usually harmless..they are how a website remembers your last visit, preferences etc.

I would post a Hijackthis log to one of those forums if only to be sure that you are OK.

Be patient as they are always frantically busy but they will help you.
