Update your dat files and scan your PC with Virusscan in Safe Mode.

To do this, tap F8 repeatedly while booting up. You'll get a boot screen with choices. Pick Safe Mode. Your PC will boot in a low resolution state as most processes won't be running. Go to "MyComputer" (XP) or "Computer" (Vista), right-click the hard drive and select "Scan" from the drop-down menu. You'll see an extra taskbar icon which will show a progress report if youhover over it.

If you think you have a virus infection still on your PC do some of the following :

- Run the free Mcafee Stinger program from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ -

Download here getsusp a new mcafee program's latest version https://community.mcafee.com/thread/32269

Ensure you add your email addy to its preferences so Mcafee can contact you if it fixes anything. It will give a list of known files and suspect files and forward them to mcafee for analysis

Before you use Getsusp, you should go to this document

https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-1323

and download the PDF file explaining what Getsusp is and how it works, and this document

https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-1761

which downloads the installation guide PDF document.

If you want a second opinion, or to be on the safe side, then you can do a scan with the free version of this tools :

SuperAntiSpyware

Re Malwarebytes try reupdating it and see if it finds anything else.

I've tried all the things you suggested in your reply and all the scans come up clean. Could it be that a prior virus has left damage to  my PC eve though the virus has been removed? Its still exceptionaly slow.

Hmm do you use registry cleaners?

Sometimes these mess up a mcafee install by deleting needed Registry settings. I feel the following is needed

1. Is AVG now removed fully by its removal method?

2. Try uninstalling Mcafee and reinstalling it via

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS100507

reboot and run

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/Mcpreinstall.exe

Reinstall from your account.

Is the speed back to normal?
