My daughter's labtop has McAfee and she just found this virus on her computer and it will not allow her to do anything and thus she cant clean and remove it. What is she to do?
You should be able to access the internet in "Safe Mode with Networking" one of the menu choices you get when you tap F8 repeatedly while booting up.
In that mode download, update and run a full scan using the free version of this tool: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php (It will run OK in Safe Mode).
That should hopefully clean enough of the infection up to enable normal use of your machine.
Run it a second time in regular mode.
Let it remove anything it finds and reboot when asked to.
Excellent advice. I got him with the same Trojan/malware. I thought I had killed it with some other software, but it apparantly lied dormant and then came back screaming for vengence. The second battle was a dogfight that just about defeated me until I did exactly what ExBrit had advised. It's now supposedly gone, but it's only been a couple of days, so I am still apprehensive. It's like a B-movie where the monster never truly dies - like Halloween or Friday the 13th. Thanks ExBrit for you advice. My only question is why hasn't McAfee put in a fix??? What good are they if we have to get other software to do their job??
There isn't any such thing as the perfect protection software unfortunately. Next time McAfee could catch something that MalwareBytes misses. That's why I always have a few extra applications lying around just in case.
There is a system whereby one can submit a file for analysis here: https://www.webimmune.net/default.asp but sometimes it's difficult to do that.Message was edited by: Ex_Brit on 06/02/10 1:28:59 EST PM
Thanks Peter (Ex_Brit). I have the similar problem. I downloaded the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using the link and made a full scan in safe mode. It did find two infected files and removed them. However, when the system was re-booted, the Antivirus Soft was still active and stopped me doing anything (with all its irritating messages etc.). Is there any recent update of the Anti-Malware? I thank for your time and help.
I don't know - you have to look for updates in the MBAM interface.
If the problem is persisting then I suggest you download Hijackthis and post its log on one of the following forums for expert advice.
