I've had to re-install this McAfee Internet Security Suite (3 times already), but
1). the 'M' icon never appears in the Windows notification area (system tray) as it used to do before, and
2). when I open the SecurityCenter and start an update, the update notification screen claims that an animated icon should appear in the Windows notification area, but it never does.
So, I'm never sure whether McAfee is running and protecting my PC and I'm never sure whether I have the latets dat files.
I hope someone has an answer soon before I'm forced to abandon McAfee.
Why did you have to reinstall in the first place?
It's possible that it's corrupted. Did you use the MCPR removal tool to clean all traces of the previous installation?
Also what operating system and service pack is this and how much memory is installed?
You should 1st try to run the McAfee Virtual Technician and see if it can repair it.
If not uninstall, run the MCPR tool and reboot, then reinstall from the online account.Message was edited by: Ex_Brit on 18/12/10 4:16:19 EST PM
I had to re-install because I got hit by some virus which corrupted McAfee. I put the PC in secure mode, cleaned out the trojan and totally removed McAfee rebooted, executed the MCPR.exe tool, as described in the McAfee support section. I then downloaded the latest DMSetup.exe from my account on the McAfee website and followed the instructions.
I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP3, 4Gb memory.
BTW, the MVT is useless, it can't find any McAfee products installed on my PC, although I have the McAfee SecurityCenter open and showing the green check mark indicating that I'm "fully protected".

It's possible the MVT wont find anything if the suite is obtained f4rom a 3rd party such as your ISp or PC maker for instance. That is odd. Perhaps the infection caused some hidden damage.
Is Internet explorer 8 installed & totally updated and at its default settings? I ask that because McAfee relies on it even if it's not your defualt browser.
If all this is the case then it's probably best to contact Technical Support Chat .
I've had 3 different sessions with their "Technical Support" and all 3 did the same, use Go2Support and re-install, and after the reboot that they initiate, they are supposed to reconnect, but this never happens. This is just a merry-go-round bs. and nothing gets done. I guess this is what happens when companies start out-sourcing their support: quality goes down the crapper....
I'll flag this to see if one of McAfee people that patrol the board can help.
Try logging off then logging back on.
Seen this issue in XP where too many things try to load at start up and some systray icons don't show.
Let us know.
Thanks, but this doesn't help either, I've rebooted several times too. Another indication that somethinkg huge is wrong with this installation is that it doesn't update the DAT file, even though it tells me that it does.
This image indicates that McAfee claims to update, but the revolving arrow icon never appears in the system tray, nor does it ever update.

This may seem to you irrelevant but what is your default browser and version please? Also regardless of what browser is your default what version of Internet Explorer is installed (open it and go to Help/About)?
Whatever the above information, and IE should be version 8, go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and click "Reset" then click Apply and OK.
Close and reopen IE and go to Tools/manage Add-ons and make sure whatever add-ons you need are re-enabled.
After a reboot see if McAfee behaves any differently.
