Recommended tool for troubleshooting Move issue in real time

Jump to solution

I have an issue with a McAfee Move client (4.6) creating a large amount of network chatter with a Move offload scan server (also 4.6).  The Move client is installed on an API server, and after looking at a few of the standard Move logs I've been unable to determine the source of the problem.  After removing the client the problem subsided.  I plan to redeploy the Move client but want to use a tool to monitor and collect data .  What is the recommended McAfee tool that I can use to collect helpful troubleshooting data in this scenario?  WebMER, McAfee Profiler, something else?

you can use the scan diagnostic tool to see the top 10 items being presented to the scanner which should help to identify what might be causing the issue.  directions on its use are in the product guide starting on pg 41

All of the traffic will be related to scanning, except for a single heartbeat thread that is used to maintain connection.  You could try the Scan Diagnostic Task, and see if the Client shows up as a Top 10 System for scan traffic, and then compare that to the Top 10 Scanned Files, and that should help alleviate some of the bandwidth consumption.

For some local troubleshooting on the MOVE Client system, you could enable debug logging (link below) to filter through everything the Client is being asked to check, and then check for some commonality like a specific file extension type.

If the mentioned API server is heavy on archive file usage, consider adding exclusions like the following to the OAS policy:

*.zip
*.rar
*.jar
*.7z
etc

Even when the SVM Setting for "scanning inside of archives" is disabled, the MOVE Client still has to transfer any archives to the scan server, and then they will be deleted after the transfer.  This can eat up unnecessary bandwidth.

Hope this helps somewhat...
