Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

I just wrote up a big long post giving you all the information I had and this message board decided my post was SPAM and deleted it. WTF!

Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

I am going to try posting this again after rewriting it from scratch...

I had posted this in another thread which is now closed...

I am having this same issue but only with 16R10. After uninstalling from add/remove programs and then running the MCPR.exe McAfee install cleaner, I reinstalled the product which reverts it back to 16R8.

Once I am back on 16R8, everything works as expected. As soon as it updates to 16R10, I start getting MMSSHOST.exe stopping all activity at random intervals while it does "something" for a few seconds, then the PC goes back to normal, sort of. I get random static while playing music that also seems related to MMSSHOST.exe as that process jumps to the top of the list for CPU usage when the static occurs.

I tried running Process Monitor from SysInternals (Microsoft) but I couldn't find a consistant activity that MMSSHOST.exe was doing when the CPU usage spiked. Sometimes it was reading the registry, sometimes it was enumerating the durrently running processes and sometimes it was "profiling". I did notice that sometimes while it was enumerating the running processes there would be a buffer overflow while reading some of the processes. It appears to try to read the process again immediately with success, so I am not sure if this is related or not.

UPDATE:
After installing 16R12 everything worked normally for about a day, after that it was back to its old shenanigans. MMSSHOST.EXE would grab about 15% of the CPU, but it would also stop everything else that was running while it was doing "something". Mouse stops working, audio gets stuttery and staticy, video stops updating, etc. This seems completely random to me.

MMSSHOSTS.EXE is using 106 threads, second only to SYSTEM at 207. Everything else on the system uses SIGNIFICANTLY fewer threads.

My computer has an SSD drive, 16GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7-6820HK CPU @ 2.7GHz

I cannot stress enough that this problem DID NOT OCCUR with McAfee 16R8. Only after updating to 16R10 (and now 16R12) did this start happening. What ever changed between 16R8 and 16R10 should be fixed or at this point, should be rolled back. This problem isn't just an inconvenience, when MMSSHOST.EXE starts doing whatever it is doing, the computer becomes UNUSABLE until it finishes.

Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

I've been dealing with this same issue for months. Something in MMSSHost.exe is causing a 100% CPU Spike with Mouse/Keyboard/Audio all freezing and unable to move on until spike is released.

I've done some playing and found that the culprit seems to be the Firewall within LiveSave. Thru Settings in LiveSafe I turned off Real-Time Scanning, Firewall, Automatic Updates and Scheduled Scans in the PC Secuirity Tab. No more Spikes.

I then turned them on one at a time. (Leaving the others OFF) When Only Firewall was turned on the freezing and 100 CPU Spike returned.

This is of course only a temporary fix until McAfee get's it together.

If this works for you post so we have common thread for McAfee to look at.

Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

This worked!  Turned off the McAfee firewall (set to Never for when to turn back on) and made sure the windows firewall was turned on. No more problems. Can actually watch a video now without skips and slowdowns and the video grinding to a halt. Thank you so much for this fix.

Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

Just an update .... since doing a compte unitstall of McAffee and reinstall I've hand no problem ... FINGERS Crossed!!

Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

My usage only went to about 15% on my PC (i7 6700K 4.00GHz 64GB Ram). However, when it went above 5% everything slowed down, games, video and audio stuttering, etc. Would last about 5 seconds and go back to normal for about 15-20 seconds then repeat. I uninstalled McAffee and reinstalled and the problem went away... for a bit. The moment I reopened MS Outlook (2013) the problem started back up again.

McAffee Internet Security V 16.0 R12

Mcaffee Security Center V 17.2 Build 17.2.124 Affld 550

McAffee VirusScan V 21.2 Build 21.2.125 Eng Ver 3399.0

McAffee Personal Firewall V 18.2 Build 18.2.123

McAffee WebAdvisor 4.0 Build 4.0.7.203

McAffee QuickClean/Shredder V 17.2 Build 17.2.126

McAffee Vulnerability Scanner V 7.2 Build 7.2.115

Disabling the Firewall does fix the CPU issue, but McAffee must fix this issue if they expect a subscription renewal.

Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

I am +1 as a frustrated user whose computer becomes unusable because of high CPU usage  of the McAfee Management Service host. This is a problem that has been going on for a while and I am amazed (to say the least) that McAfee has not fixed it yet. How can I expect from McAfee that you will actually protect us from malicious software when your own software hijacks our computers (obviously unintentionally) and you can't even have a solution after so many months? Does your CEO/CTO know about this issue or do you keep it secret? Seriously, I can't comprehend what is going on here!

"How can I expect from McAfee that you will actually protect us from malicious software when your own software hijacks our computers".... An interesting vew that I can agree with.

Re: McAfee Management Service host - VERY HIGH CPU USAGE

Everyone who is still affected by this problem, below is the action plan

1. Log collection to be done from your respective machines following article TS101980

2. Once these logs are collected we will analyze the same and post back our findings. Will let everyone know if more data needs to be collected just in case.

NOTE: We have already resolved a similar issue in McAfee version 16.0 R12. It is likely that a new variant of issue has started and needs investigation.

Whoever willing to contribute to the logs can post here so that we can get back to you. Also I'd like to inform that log collection process might take a while since the issue is performance related.
