Wildcard Escape (How is this used?) |*|*

Hello All,

I hope all is well. I've only posted once here, so thanks in advance for any help.

I am trying to find some instruction on how to use the Wildcard Escape shown in the HIPS literature. The escape is |*|* However I cannot find an example of how this is used.

I am trying to wildcard out a portion of a path, and using *\*\ etc. doesn't seem to work in a lot of instances under advanced parameters. e.g. C:\Users\*\*\Snagit\*.jpg does not seem to work.

The example given above is not representative of what's being blocked, just a crude example.

I am hoping the wildcard escape works something like C:\Users\**\Documents\|*|*Snagit\*.jpg

I do not want to wildcard out the entire path from Users\** forward all the way to the end. Basically I want to wild card out from one point in the path to a certain point and then allow it to traverse the rest of the path normally according to the built in logic.

Thanks so much for anyone that can provide an example, anyone that's able to help. It's surely appreciated.

The following documentation should help you: (page 72)

Re: Wildcard Escape (How is this used?) |*|*

Thank you very much for replying

Unfortunately, this is the documentation where I discovered the wildcard escape, and well, it does not provide an example of how to use it. All it says is, you can use it, and-

NOTE: For ** the escape is |*|*.

One document shows which of the fields in HIPS exceptions these wildcard are permissible, and in my case it would be Detailed Event Information. Since Detailed Event Information can have so much data, so many characters (especially for powershell), I need to wildcard out entire portions, but i need a way to specify that beyond a certain point, stop the wildcard process.

Am I correct in assuming the wildcard escape does that?

The note on page 72 says NOTE: For ** the escape is |*|*.

Please provide an example, otherwise I'm still a little confused
