Registry Key-Based CAG/LAG is Inconsistent

I'm having an issue on my clustered SQL and Exchange servers with the HIPS firewall LAG not working consistently.

As I understand it, LAG criteria is based off of either network adapter settings or a registry key. Since I am unable to control the Windows Server Failover Cluster settings, I opted to use a registry key as my LAG criteria.

In SQL's case, I used a registry key containing the cluster name. This works successfully for for a while -- but after a few days or a week, it inexplicably stops recognizing it as part of the LAG and drops the traffic. I verified that the rules exist (and in fact they were processed successfully when the LAG was working). It's specifically that the LAG criteria suddenly fails.

This has happened twice and each time I confirmed that the registry key did NOT change.

How can I troubleshoot or resolve this?

Re: Registry Key-Based CAG/LAG is Inconsistent

I'm not sure what version of HIPS you are on (there have been LAG issues fixed in certain HIPS 8.0 patches), but would be best to troubleshoot this with McAfee Support Service Request to see why the Registry criteria check is failing.

Make sure to enable HIPS debug logging, and capture a MER file when the HIPS Location Aware Group (using the Registry location criteria) check fails.  I would also suggest gathering a AMtrace and Procmon log during the time the Registry criteria check fails.  If you can test with the latest HIPS 8.0 patch (Patch 11 that would help eliminate known issues.
