Protect McAfee products from being disabled/removed in Windows Safe Mode

Jump to solution

In a majority of McAfee products the self-protection features can be bypassed when a Windows system is booted into Safe Mode.

How would you prevent this disablement or monitor the actions - using McAfee or 3rd party products?  I understand that much of this behavior is to allow for support/removal of products, but looking from the other side - what's stopping a malicious actor from using Safe Mode to bypass all the security controls.

I've left this in Business since the question can pertain to Application/Change Control, DLPe, HIPS, McAfee Agent, etc...

Thanks for the link.  That definitely solves the use case if DLP Endpoint is in the environment.  Create a protection rule to prevent specified registry key changes.

Any thoughts on protection of products that don't have a feature to enable functionality/self-protection within Safe Mode?  Or on devices that don't have DLP Endpoint available?

The McAfee VSE Software lets you define within the Acces Protection Policy custom rules for protecting registry settings as well as File and folder settings. Does this may help?

The DLPe functionality me the specific use case that I was encountering.  But only because it was deployed to systems and could be leveraged for protection/monitoring purposes.

I'm curious to know how other isolated point products could protect themselves from within SafeMode and/or if they already have options available.  I'm marking this question answered, though.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance/discussion.
