Uninstall Mcafee ENS on Windows 2016

Dear Tech Community,

I have a problem with my Windows 2016 server with Mcafee ENS 10.7 installed. I have uninstalled Mcafee ENS using ePO Client Task and the uninstalled was successful, including the agent was uninstalled successfully however Windows Defender is shown as uninstalled.

When I try to installed Windows Defender from Server Manager I'm getting the following message

Defender2.PNG

It appears Mcafee ENS uninstalled Windows Defender, however now I'm unable to return Defender back.

Any suggestions,

Thank you

Re: Uninstall Mcafee ENS on Windows 2016

Hi,
This behaviour is as expected and documented in the below KB article.
https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB88214

I understand your concern and if you would like to re-install Windows Defender please follow the below link.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/defender-endpoint/microsoft-defender-antivir...

Hope this helps, if not it will be a good idea to reach out to MS support.

Re: Uninstall Mcafee ENS on Windows 2016

Hi Muquit,

I understand that Mcafee ENS will uninstall Defender when ENS is installed and when ENS is uninstalled it will trigger Defender installation however in this case it did not happen.

I can not install Defender neither thru Server Manager neither thru PowerShell as suggested, as shown with my screenshot.

Can you advise how to correct the problem.

Thank you

Thank you for your response.
Do you see any remnants of ENS on the system?
Could you verify the below locations are not present?

HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Mcafee
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Network Associates\
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall (any entries of McAfee products)

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
All entries beginning with *mfe and mcshield, mctaskmanager and masvc

Folders
C:/Windows/Temp/McAfeeLogs
%Temp%/McAfeeLogs
%ProgramData%/McAfee
C:/Program Files/McAfee
C:/Program Files/Common Files/McAfee
C:/Program Files (86)/McAfee
C:/Program Files (86)/Common Files/McAfee

%AppData%\Roaming of every user (installation issues)

If we do have any remnants, could you please delete them, reboot and then try again.
