Hello. We use endpoint security through mcafee and are using the EPO for managing windows machines. I am coming across a situation where two machines svchost.exe is attempting to terminate all the mcafee processes. I do see online that certain people run into this problem. Has anyone discovered how to pinpoint what aspect of windows is doing this? Scans are coming back clean.
I am curious because this occurs every day. The log count is overwhelming and it attempts to terminate 1-15 programs controlled by mcafee.
Example below:
Threat Source Process Name:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe |
Threat Target File Path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\Common Framework\naPrdMgr.exe |
Threat Type:Action Taken:
access protection |
deny terminate |

@jgs1986 This is due to changes to the behavior of svchost.exe that Microsoft made back with Windows 8 and Server 2012 OS. This is described further in KB85145.
You can either disable reporting as suggested in the workaround section of the article, or, since svchost.exe is not actually taking a terminate process action, only querying permissions to check if it can be terminated, you could implement an exclusion for it on that rule, and rely on other self-protection mechanisms to cover svchost.exe's actions.
