Exploit Prevention - Adding Registry rule

Jump to solution

Running ENS 10.5.3 and I'm trying to add a rule in Exploit Prevention to report on the modification of the Reg Key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. I've attempted to add the a rule with the following syntax but I keep seeing the this error in the log files:

Rule:

Rule {
 Process {
  Include OBJECT_NAME {
   -v regedit.exe
  }
 }
 Target {
  Match KEY {
   Include OBJECT_NAME {
    -v "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run**"
   }
  Include -access "CREATE WRITE DELETE REPLACE_KEY RESTORE_KEY"
  }
 }
}

Error:

12/17/2018 08:57:33.578 AM MFEConsole(4932.2276) <----> MFEConsole.MFEConsole.Error (mfeux_extension.cpp:2150):  BO - setPropertiesEndEx ( [114795232]) : operation returned non-success: BL_ERROR_INVALID_PARAM

I'm sure it's just a syntax issue, but I can't find any documentation to guide with creating these rules. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi @KevinV6000

For "\" to be parsed correctly in registry path it needs to be doubled "\\"

This should work fine:

Rule {
 Process {
  Include OBJECT_NAME {
   -v regedit.exe
  }
 }
 Target {
  Match KEY {
   Include OBJECT_NAME {
    -v "HKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run**"
   }
  Include -access "CREATE WRITE DELETE REPLACE_KEY RESTORE_KEY"
  }
 }
}
