Endpoint Upgrade Assistant 2.3.1.17 Failing

Jump to solution

Hello,

We are currently on ePO 5.10 with EUA extension 2.3.1.17 installed. I am testing the endpoint upgrade assistant by creating a deployment task to upgrade the agent, remove VSE 8.8 and install ENS 10.6.1 platform and threat prevention.

My steps are create the deployment task with EUA and deploy the task to my test machines with VSE 8.8 installed. The deployment task is able to upgrade the agent, remove VSE but it fails to install at the ENS platform module. What am I doing wrong? The software are all checked into the correct branch.

@DustOffePO

The installer log is only telling us that a condition exists, where it believes that a reboot is necessary.  I would have to assume that a reboot has been attempted, and the issue continues.  There are several conditions that could apply, where the installer believes a reboot is necessary, but performing a reboot results in the same messaging.  Items such as files being appended with a .deleteme extension, and services keys in the registry containing a "delete on reboot" value could result in this continued message/failure.

If it hasn't been attempted, it would be ideal to get a support case going so that we can dig more into the failure, and look at some more context within the installer log than what can be viewed here.

Re: Endpoint Upgrade Assistant 2.3.1.17 Failing

To see why the installation is failing, we would really need to look at the logs. You can find the logs in C:\Windows\Temp\McafeeLogs

What you can do to find the reason for the installation failure is:

Open the installation log location and sort files by date and time > you'll want to look at the first installation-log present and for ENS this will be the Common Installation log first.

Open the first installation related log i.e. Common_Install.log and scroll to bottom, you will see the installation failure code i.e. “return code: 1603” (all MSI installation error codes are listed here, https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa372835(v=vs.85).aspx)

If you do see 1603, then scroll back up to the top of the log file and search for “value 3” (the word value may be different pending on log language). The first entry you find shows you point of failure.
e.:
!> Error - SysCore install failed: 255
<= leave custom action Install_SysCore()
CustomAction Install_SysCore returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
Fin de la acción 12:28:11: InstallExecute. Return value 3.
MSI (s) (98:70) [12:28:11:908]: Note: 1: 2265 2: 3: -2147287035 >> with these entries “Error - SysCore install failed: 255” and “-2147287035” you can search on the agent portal for errors

It may also point you to look at another log file, in which case you can go to the mentioned log file and search for "error" or "fail". Again you can then search for these in agent portal.

We also have a KB which might help you: https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB87589

Feel free to share a further extract from the log files!

Just to metnion quickly. We never used the ENDPOINT assitant to deploy software or generate jobs.
We just migrated the POLICYS thats the main part. Thats said we do that since ENS 10.2 and over 30 custom EPO installations.

If you RUN a DEPLOYMENT Jobs for ENS

1) Endpoint Security Platform
2) Endpoint Security Threat Prevention

Those two main PARTS in the ORDER. (Other like Firewall and Web plus ATP Module if you need)
Then Normaly it WILL Deinstall VSE 8.8 and Upgrade to ENS 10.6.1 automatic.

Make SURE your have VSE 8.8 Patch 12 (Just the latest) on all your systems.

I would recommand more to FOCUS on the POLICY for the ENS and that THOSE are ready and tested and assigned.

Greetings

So I shouldn't be using the endpoint migration upgrade assistant to upgrade our VSE to ENS? or am I misunderstanding?

Based on the current details, I do not see anything to indicate that the order of operations is incorrect.  EUA can be used to remove legacy products and install ENS (actually desgined to do that).

Installation issues can be quite difficult to diagnose.  They sometimes require a good reproduction, and addtitional data collection outside of what the installers create for us.  Unless there is a clear, consistent failure code that occurs during installation which we have already documented and fully understand, these types of issues are best addressed by opening a support case.

The above common bootstrapper log does give us a further approach to understand more about the issue, however.  Notice that the bootstrapper log records the following:

24/01/2019 11:56:27.795 [7172] [BootstrapperMain] RunCommandLine: "C:\ProgramData\McAfee\EUA\ENDP_GS_1060\Install\0000\\mfehidin.exe" -installcab:"vscore_all.cab" -guid:{EA334ECD-7513-486B-A265-0C698FACBB06} -log:"C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\\McAfeeLogs\McAfee_Common_VSCore_Install_All_24012019115627702.log" -etl:"C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\\McAfeeLogs\McAfee_Common_VSCore_Install_All_24012019115627702.etl"

24/01/2019 11:58:31.375 [7172] [BootstrapperMain] RunCommandLine: Process return code : 4294967295
24/01/2019 11:58:31.375 [7172] [BootstrapperMain] !> Error - Could not run command to uninstall vscore helper util: -1
24/01/2019 11:58:31.375 [7172] [BootstrapperMain] VSCore uninstall helper failed. Returning!!

mfehidin.exe is the installer for what we refer to as "Syscore."  Essentially, a fancy name for kernel drivers.  This message tells us that the syscore installer is failing, and it points us to the following VSCore Installer log:

McAfee_Common_VSCore_Install_All_24012019115627702.log

The next action is to review this install log, to see if we can determine a better focus for the failure.  To assist with reviewing the log, we can search down in this log for a key word of "roll."  What we are looking for, is the first instance of "rolling back action," which is where the installer attempts to revert any recent changes that occurred prior to the failure.  It isn't always accurate, but generally leads us to a more specific failure point.

As an example, we may discover that the installer failed to start services that are dependent upon MMS (McAfee Service Controller).  This may not help us completely correct the failure, but it does help provide a good amount of context for the overall experience.  We can then collect items such as Procmon and AMTrace while reproducing the failure (to get updated installation logs), and provide those to support for further assistance.

In using this troubleshooting method, if we do come across a specific failure code, it is always ideal to search for any KB's that might contain the same failure code, as there could already be information available that addresses that specific failure point.

Unfortunately, the return code of 4294967295 isn't too helpful in and of itself, as this is simply a code to state "I am sorry, but I failed."

@DustOffePO

@DustOffePO  have you had any luck in resolving your issue? I'm having the exact same problem. I have a case open with support but it's been a painful process so far.
