We have EEM 5.2.5 EEM installed with 20000 + (4.2, 5.1. & 5.2.5) clients.
Now compnay want to upgrade to McAfee EEPC 6.x with EPO.
I read in disccusion that 4.2 client do not support upgration so we have to upgrade all (4000 client) to 5.x first and then only we will able to upgrade them to 6.x.
My question is can we upgrade servers without upgrading 4.2 clients to 5.x and later we upgrade those client to 5.x and after that to 6.x ?
We Must have to upgrade all 4.2 client to 5.x before starting server upgradation ? what is recommended ?
Thanks in advance for suguestions
Not that i've ever used EEM before or done a migration, but from this article here:
It says that the minimum supported version for upgrade is 5.1.3, so my guess is you would have to upgrade all the clients first as they probably won't be supported in ePO below that version.
Thanks for reply. and agreed that I have to upgrade all client from 4.2 to 5.x then only I will be able to upgrade them to 6.x
but my question is.. Can we upgrade servers and migrate all existing 5.x clients to 6.x & simultanesouly upgrade 4.2 clients to 5.x ?
is it mendatory to upgrade 4.2 client before starting migration from EEM to EPO+ McAfee EEPC 6.0 ?
You never upgrade the EEM server - it gets junked when you move to v6, so yes, you can be migrating v5 clients to v6 at the same time you're migrating v4 clients to v5.
Thanks for reply Simon..
we have decided to move to EEPC 6.0 with EPO. we have new servers for that. we are going install EPO on new servers and will be importing database to those new servers. existing EEM server will there in network until we move all object from EEM to EPO.
is it ok if we exclude 4.x machines right while importing from 5.x to 6.x EPO (as we have to upgrade them to 5.x first) and later once we complete upgradation from 4.x to 5.x through EEM in 1-2 months. and then we import those machines in EPO ?
is it possible ?
There's no "import" of machines into EPO - it's a migration. The machine simply switches allegiance when you deploy the V6 package to it.
above link says there are two upgrade methologies. one mothology is using Endpoint Encryption Migration Utility. through which we have export database and then have to import it in EPO. (this method will not reset client users password to 12345. password will be remain same. thats why company is preferring this procedure)
not sure what your question is? In either case, EEM is disposed of after you're finished with it, and machines continue to talk to EEM until you upgrade their clients to EEPC6?
We would need your advice on the following.
The current structure is as below
1.20000 clients (v4=4000,v5.1=8000,v5.2=8000)
2. EEM 5.2.5
Now the company wants to migrate from EEM5.2.5 to EPO4.x
what is the best possible way to migrate keeping in mind the mixed client version of our company.
As per our understanding the machines v5.1 & v5.2 will upgrade smoothly to the newer version.
So we are worried about the machines with v4.
The questions we have are as follows.
1. Can we start the server upgradation from EEM 5.2.5 to EP04.x +Mcafee EEPC6
2. Do we have to upgrade the v4 machines before initiating the upgradation ?
3. Should we carry out the activity in a phased manner like
a) Install the Mcafee EPO server with EEPC6
b) Start upgradation of existing v5 machines
c) Upgrade the v4 machies to v5 using file group switching in EEM. Once its done, upgrade it to v6.
PS - As there are 4000 machines with v4 which would take lot of time (we are assuming it to be 2 months) but the company want us to upgrade EEM 5.2 to EPO4 asap hence want to know is it possible to upgrade?
Many Thanks in advance for your expert advice.
I think you would be better off getting some professional services help than asking me :-)
You can migrate the v5 machines whenever you need, and you can upgrade the v4 machines whenever you want. The two tasks are independant.
