EEPCv7: GPT support about VISTA or 2008.

Jump to solution

Hi,

EEPCv7 can support GPT drives on BIOS system, but EEPCv7 can support Windows VISTA(64bit) and Windows 2008(64bit) with GTP drive?

Basically, I think GPT drives is able to be used on not only Windows7(64bit) or Windows 8 but also VISTA(64bit) or 2008(64bit).

(If my understanding is not correct, please show my fault)

For your information, EEPCv7 can support following OS in Release Notes.

==================

Windows Server 2008 (32-and 64-bit)

Windows XP Professional SP3 (32-bit only)

Windows Vista SP1 and later versions (32-and 64-bit)

Windows 7 and SP1 (32-and 64-bit), (Not XP Mode)

Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit)

==================

Furthermore, KB76804 says following.

==================

Only Windows 7 (64-bit) and Window 8 currently support the UEFI native boot process.

Hi,

Unfortunately not. GPT as a boot disk is only supported in EEPC V7 with a UEFI environment, from Windows 7 64-bit onwards. Vista/2008 are definitely *not* supported with GPT boot disks. Sorry!

Kind regards,

Tim

No. GPT is only supported for the uEFI version of EEPC, so Windows8 only.

Just seen this!

Simon, you're correct that we only support GPT as the boot disk under UEFI (GPT is a requirement for Windows booting in UEFI mode - although is not actually a requirement for UEFI itself).

However, with V7 you can connect non-boot GPT drives as secondary/tertiary etc. drives to the system, and they will encrypt.  Additionally, we support large (>3TB) GPT disks in these scenarios.

Therefore:

BIOS boot      :          Boot disk                MBR

                                   Other disks            MBR or GPT

UEFI boot:                 Boot disk               GPT

                                    Other disks            MBR or GPT

Hope that clarifies things a bit

Safeboot, dwebb,

Thank you.

In conclusion, EEPCv7 can support Windows VISTA(64bit) and Windows 2008(64bit) with GTP drive?

Alex, you are unfortunately incorrect.

You can use a GPT drive with EEPC V7 on a BIOS booting machine as long as it is not the boot disk.

On a UEFI booting machine, any disk (including the boot disk) can be a GPT disk.

Oh, So I am confused here, look this Q in EEEP7 Ref Guide posted here

Q: Can the BIOS pre-boot also support GPT drives?

As a boot disk – No.

So I thought it is only supported for UEFI boot. .

That's exactly what Dave said - you can encrypt a GPT drive on any version of Windows supported by EEPC7 if it's NOT the boot drive, but you can only encrypt a boot GPT disk if you are using EEPC7, and uEFI.

I'm glad that this discussion is activational.

But, what I'd like to know is, EEPCv7 can support Windows VISTA(64bit) and Windows 2008(64bit) with GTP drive as boot drive or not.

VISTA and 2008 is the OS GPT can be available as boot drive, I think.

So, I wonder EEPCv7 can support GPT as boot drive on following OS.

Windows 8

Windows 7 (64-bit)

Windows VISTA (64-bit)

Windows 2008 (64-bit)

Is that true?
