Does drive encryption login apply to all drives?

Jump to solution

I have an encrypted laptop with a broken Windows 7 installation.

  • I get the McAfee Encryption login (which loads from the EUFI partition, right?) and the Windows Recovery Tools load (from the recovery partition?), so the drive itself seems OK, but Windows won't boot (it takes me straight to recovery).
  • I don't have easy access to McAfee's disaster recovery tools. IT request in progress, but could take weeks if ever.
  • My company sent me a second laptop which has the same McAfee Encryption username/password.

Question: if I put the old disk in the new machine and booted that machine through its McAfee Encryption login, would that grant me access to the contents of the old drive?

Catch you, you mean, connecting old HDD to the new system as secondary drive.
"No, it won't work in this way". The sectors of the HDD have been encrypted using unique encryption key.
The key won't load until the PBA authentication of the particular HDD is successful.
PBA loads only via MBR.
Now, you know, why I said "No, it won't work in this way".

In order to recover the data, use DETech tool and remove DE then repair OS.
OR you copy the data by using WinPE / EzPE then format the HDD.

Note: Remember to remove partition table when reimage the system.

You can put the old HDD in the new PC and boot up. Ensure that the Boot Mode is set to the same value (UEFI Enabled / Legacy BIOS) and the other BIOS settings also should match exactly.

Do you mean... boot the old HDD? It won't boot, because Windows 7 is corrupted.

What I'm asking is if I boot off the new disk, can I access the old disk if I put that in the new machine, also.
