I think your problem might have something to do with dynamic partitions as oppose to basic.

Dynamic and RAID Disks in Windows

2000/XP/2003/VISTA

Because Endpoint Encryption works at sector level, it does not support software-based

dynamic disks as seen in Windows 2000, etc.

then the problem lies in the difference between this non-working laptop, and all the others which do. Is the partition a normal basic partition?

If the problem is only one machine out of many, it's often simpler to re-image it than to work out where it's gone wrong.
