the company where I work assigned me a brand new laptop encrypted with McAfee Endpoint Encryption. Being a PC I should use only for work I don't want to install any personal software on it.
But being very often on business trips I cannot travel with two laptops (personal + business)...
I was wondering whether is it possible to install another XP (no need to be encrypted) on a USB ext drive and let the PC boot from ext when I need my personal stuff. I see that the Bios allows to boot from external drives.
Does it in any way harm the integrity on the main hard disk? Does it create conflicts to Mcafee encryption? I don't want to have troubles with my company.
Thanks a lot!
Run another OS from USB drive? ... no, that will not work.
Get a screwdriver and keep swapping hard drives. That will work. For modern laptop SATA drives you may not even need to keep putting HD cover on. It is pretty tight with rubber sleves that hold hard disk. Have a sturdy, padded case for HD that is currently outside of your laptop.
thanks for your post. Swapping HDs would harm laptop' warrantly, I don't think I can do it.
It's still strange to me why installing another OS on USB drive should not work. Can you kindly explain me why?
Thanks a lot!
Why not simply use Ubuntu on your USB drive? Just don't try to format or write anything to your hard disk.
