Endpoint Encryption 5.2.3 HDD with failing sectors

We have a laptop with failing sectors on the hard drive so it won't boot up...

Is it possible to run CHKDSK??

Or, what is the procedure for decrypting and recovering the data from the hard drive?

What are our options please??

it's possible to run chkdsk for sure, but won't that make the problem worse? It would be better just to boot up from a winPE CD and copy the users data off - the less writes you can cause, the better.

Re: Endpoint Encryption 5.2.3 HDD with failing sectors

Never used WinPE...

Can I slave the drive and decrypt somehow?

Or is there another boot disc to use?

Thank you

if you decrypt, you are creating writes, thus likely to cause the drive to fail completely - but yes, you can slave it to an unprotected machine and use WinTech to read the data off. Don't try to decrypt though, you need to cause as few writes as possible.

It came with the product - you already have it as part of the distribution media? You need to make a WinPE image though, or use WinTech on an unencrypted machine. Your platinum support person can help sort it out, or you can use professional services.

You need to make it yourself by following the instructions with the package - everything you need is included with the EEPC/EEM downloads of your product? It's not something you can buy separately.

Re: Endpoint Encryption 5.2.3 HDD with failing sectors

I think you may have mis-read my last post - we don't have the CD (or an original download)

Are you saying that mcafee will not make the wintech cd available for download?

or

Can't I purchase the whole software (version 5.2) again?

Re: Endpoint Encryption 5.2.3 HDD with failing sectors

One thing we often do when dealing with failing drives is clone it first.  If you are lucky enough to have a LogiCube, it's very fast.  If not, I highly recommend them.  Yes, it's expensive up front, but it's a life saver.  You must do a Raw Copy for an encrypted drive, but like Simon mentioned, reading a disc is less likely to cause further damage than writing to it.  Once cloned, you can attempt to just read it, but if you must, you can decrypt it as well.

Now, if there were a tool to decrypt a drive in less than 24 hours, that would be a treat!  I've yet to understand why it takes 3 hours to encrypt our drives, and 2 days to decrypt them.
