McAfee IPS - Upgrading your Security Manager

Introduction

New security features and product enhancements almost always come in new versions as opposed to "dot releases" or patches.  However because of the network and security critical areas, an IPS is often deployed, upgrading versions can present other challenges.  This document has been created to illustrate the requirements and present some helpful tips to the upgrade process.

Upgrading NSM 6.1 to 7.1

The Network Security Manager version 6.1 is many years old at this point and while most recognize the value of upgrading, internal or organizational constraints often prevent moving to the latest stable (X.1) in a timely fashion.  This is just a fact of life but often comes at the cost of a stronger security posture.

Items to consider prior to upgrading:

          Host Operating System:

For NSM 6.1 the host operating system could be Windows 2003 or Windows 2008.

NSM 7.1 will only run on Windows 2008 so an upgrade of the underlying host OS may be required prior to upgrading.

Perform a database Backup: It is recommended that you back up the following:

                - All Tables  backup

                - Config Tables backup

                - Archiving alerts and packet logs

*Note: detailed backup instruction can be found in the administration guide additional upgrade information can be found in the upgrade guide

Upgrading NSM 7.1 to 8.1

The Network Security Manager version 7.1 is approximately two years at the time this post was created and while most recognize the value of upgrading, internal or organizational constraints often prevent moving to the latest stable (X.1) in a timely fashion.  This is just a fact of life but often comes at the cost of a stronger security posture.

Note: Additional steps, processes, and features can be located in the "Upgrade Guide".

Items to consider prior to upgrading

          Host Operating System:

In NSM version 7.1 Windows 2008R2 was the recommended host OS.  While Windows 2008R2 is still supported additional support for Windows 2012 has also been added.
