Windows Server Backup fails System State due to DLP file

Any time a Windows Server Backup of the System State is performed, it fails due to the same file every time. C:\Windows\System32\drivers\hdlpctrl.sys This is using DLP 11.1 as well as 11.0. The System state is captured successfully when DLP is uninstalled from the system. As far as I can tell, there are no events firing from this attempt as there are none in ePO and nothing shows up in the event folder on the local system. The exact error within Windows is as follows: Error in backup of C:\Windows\System32\drivers\hdlpctrl.sys during write: Error [0x80070005] Access is denied. I have attempted to modify the file to test and I receive an "Access Denied" message. Where can I go to see if there is some sort of Self Protection occuring and what do I tell the SysAds of the servers that want DLP removed so they can do System State backups? The backup software does not permit exclusion of a particular file, but only file extensions and folders.

Re: Windows Server Backup fails System State due to DLP file

Under Windows Client Configuration-->Advanced Configuration-->Access Protection Settings. Please disable

DLP access protection:

Now apply this policy and test if Windows updates are successful.

Re: Windows Server Backup fails System State due to DLP file

Thank you VERY much for the response.  Disabling that allowed the backup to complete successfully.  Is there possibly a way to set up exclusions so that I do not have to disable the entire functionality of Access Protection for DLP?

There is one option where DLP can trust the backup application.

Re: Windows Server Backup fails System State due to DLP file

Thank you again for this link.  I run into an issue on Step 5 under Adding the Template to a Rule.  Step 5 has me "Under Settings, click Application Strategy.".  This option is not available.  I have checked the Product guide for DLP 11.0 and 11.1 and both say to access this option which I am not able to locate.  I went through and created a new DLP Policy and still no option for Application Strategy.

Re: Windows Server Backup fails System State due to DLP file

1.Click on Policy Catalog.

2. From the Drop down(Product) select Data Loss Prevention.

3. Select DLP Policy under Category

4. Click on any of the DLP policies.

You will see the suggested option under 'Settings'.

Ensure that we first test it on a test policy instead of production one. Attached is the screenshot for further guidance.

Very interesting. I have Device Classes as well as Privileged Users, but I do not have the option of Application Strategy.

Re: Windows Server Backup fails System State due to DLP file

Looks like you have Device Control(Enterprise) only license not the full one.

Login to ePO console-->Menu-->DLP Settings->General tab License.

Yep.  The only license I have is for McAfee DLP Endpoint.  Well thank you for your time and assistance with this.  I do greatly appreciate it.
