USB Fails After MS CU KB3194496 if DLPe Is Present

If Microsoft Cumulative Update KB3194496 installs on a Windows 10 computer that has DLPe 10 installed, the USB ports will fail to operate. Usual user complaint is that keyboard and mouse are inoperative, yet one can connect to the desktop via RDC okay. If one opens Windows Device Manager, all USB devices have yellow warning badges.  Restarts and cold restarts do not fix the problem.

We have observed this on 38 domain-joined Windows 10 desktops this past week.

Microsoft Cumulative Update KB3194496 was issued on September 29. It only applies to Windows 10 version 1607 (Anniversary Update) computers.

Our best fix so far is to remove the DLPe agent via ePo then restart the desktop.  The USB ports are then okay.

I have not investigated further yet.  One thing I want to see is what happens if I reinstall the DLPe 10 agent after MS CU KB3194496 has been successfully installed.

What version of DLPE was installed?

DLP Endpoint 10.0.0.1322 was the local agent.  ePO extensions 9.4 and 10 Patch1 were present at the management server.

Any news on that? I'm suffering from the same USB failure after installing KB3194496 and any of the consecutive cumulative updates, incl. today's KB3194798. I know that some other workstations at the office are also affected, while only a few people complain on this over the web.

My DLPe version is 10.2.0, so if it's the case, the newer ones are affected as well.

Yes.  In our experience, we found that if DLP Endpoint 10.0.0.1322 is updated to DLP Endpoint 10.0.100.372 (DLPe 10 Patch 1) first, before allowing the cumulative updates for Windows 10 v 1607 to install, the Windows cumulative updates proceed okay.

We have some 200+ desktops that have now applied Win 10 v 1670 and the subsequent Cumulative Update KB3194496 okay.  I think that Microsoft has also updated KB3194496 as well.

Hi,

Please make sure that you are using DLPe Redstone compatible builds and above, which are:

  • 10.0.100.372
  • 9.4.230.102
  • 9.3.630.6

Thanks,

Matan
