How do I block USB printing for 20000 employees without blocking other peripheral devices?

Hello,

I need to block the employees from using their personal USB printers at home. We have a specific set of users who do need USB printers and we have put them in an AD security group. We have also given them specific USB printer that they must order to be able to install.

Again, question is to block employees from using their personal USB printers at home without blocking peripherals such as USB KB, USB Mice. Also, need to make sure that the employees that are using the authorized USB printers do NOT get blocked.

Thank you.

Hi @whatsup379 ,

Thank you for writing in here.

USB printers are detected as Local Printers and can be blocked by selecting the "local printer" option in the Printer Protection rule.

You can add the AD user group instead of Any user in the Rule's condition tab.

Thank you.

Thank you for the quick response. Can this policy be customized in a way that it is location aware? Meaning, if the user is at work, I want them to be able to use the USB printer but when they are on VPN, I want the USB printer blocked.

Thank you so much for the quick response.

I guess there has to be a beacon (server) where the laptops, if connected on VPN will report to. The policy will need to be created around this beacon for location aware. Are there other forms/logic available that can be used for location aware? For example, if the IP range for devices connected in VPN is 1.1.x.x to 1.3.x.x, can the policy be defined in a way that any devices that fall in this ip range will have the USB print blocked?

Forgot to ask, but is there a specific version of McAfee that is needed to accomplish this? Also, is there a list of requirements for "location aware" scenario?

Re: How do I block USB printing for 20000 employees without blocking other peripheral devices?

Hi @whatsup379 ,

All versions of McAfee DLP 11.X can accomplish this.

Question: Are there other forms/logic available that can be used for location aware? For example, if the IP range for devices connected in VPN is 1.1.x.x to 1.3.x.x, can the policy be defined in a way that any devices that fall in this ip range will have the USB print blocked?

Answer: Nope, print rule allows you to specify only the End Users to whom this rule can be applied. If you would like to differentiate between machines connected via VPN and connected to LAN network, the above settings in client configuration policy needs to be used.

Thank you.
