white exclamation point in red circle on documents

Hi,

I updated McAfee today, and now see the annoying white and red exclamation points on most of my files.

I would like to get rid of these exclamation points.  I have looked around, and it seems related to a new online backup feature.  I have seen some administrator responses that I should not worry and that these will go away after the file has been backed up.

However, I would not like these files to be backed up using the online restore or backup feature.  I also would like to not have red exclamation points on all of my files.  (Online backup is not currently installed (I believe), but I do not want to have to install it just to turn it off.. that doesn't seem productive).

Is there an easy way to turn off the red exclamation points without having to either A) participate in the online backup function or B) uninstalling and reinstalling macafee? If there is not an option beyond these two, it seems to me more than a little annoying that this feature would be added without asking me whether or not I wanted it.

Thanks,

JP

Open security centre and go to navigation . Is there an entry for online backup shown? On navigation on left column under settings open the features link and see if backup is installed or only available?

If it is installed no way to remove it bar

1 uninstalling the whole suite and reinstalling using custom option.

2. If online a program separate to Total protection (it was a while back) it would be uninstalled by its own removal option in add/remove programs or the vista/win7 equivalent.

All that said you can call tech support and check with them. link in useful links tab above.

Online was a separate program then

Re: white exclamation point in red circle on documents

Hi Tony, thanks for replying.

Yes, there is an entry for online backup in the navigation menu.  I don't believe it is installed, as when I click on that entry, I get a windows popup asking if I want to allow the program to make changes and launch "MozyUACLaunch.exe".   Since it does not seem to be installed, I assume the exclamation points will stick around indefinitely.  I think I am correct in assuming that, barring me installing Mozy, the only difference/harm done by these might be that they make my icons look ugly, but still. I'd like to get rid of them.

I don't use Online Backup so don't know if this will work but it's a solution I found online:

You can turn them off, if you want to.

Right-click the McAfee Online Backup icon in your taskbar and select Configure.

Click the Options tab.

Select Disable icon overlays in Windows Explorer, then click Save.

Restart your computer.

It's a stab in the dark really as I don't have it installed.    But if it helps then good.

Re: white exclamation point in red circle on documents

Hi Peter,

No, I don't have an icon for online backup in my toolbar.  The only icon I have is for MacAfee's Internet Security.  I don't see a listing in the navigation panel settings to turn them off either.

The only way I see anything referring to online backup is if I go to the Navigation panel and look towards the bottom of the features, where it is listed as Online Backup with a short description and link.  However, the link just tries to launch "MozyUACLaunch.exe".

I don't believe I have online backup installed since I don't have an icon and the only reference is the launcher.  I am afraid that the workaround listed above may just refer to turning off the exclamation points once you install the Online Backup, which kind of defeats the purpose of what I'd like to do.

Then I'm really not sure what is going on here but to make sure it is not an infection do the Hijackthis routine that is outlined near the bottom of this document:  https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-2168 - those specialist forums may have some ideas for you.

You also can ask tech support to confirm if you have it installed I gather these exclamation marks only show if you have it installed . they will be able to confirm this in a jiffy we cannot see your security centre but thay can remotely view it.

Link to support in useful links tab above.

Re: white exclamation point in red circle on documents

Hi Jay

I've got the same 'disease' and use McAfee Internet Security on Windows 7, 64 Bit. I checked with McAfee's tech support 'cos I was sure that McAfee was the cause but I didn't know for definite. However, they seemed at a loss as to what the cause was and suggested talking to a higher tech level.  Huh!

But, having read the replies from PeaceKeeper and Ex_Brit,  I decided to install McAfee's Online Backup as I had an idea that McAfee was just flagging up that files had not been backed up. So I did, then set it up to backup a non-descript file set (they only give you 1Gb of space, which is about as useful as .....).

And . . . . . Bingo !   All those annoying exclamation marks have now disappeared and all my icons have been restored to their old selves.

All you need to do then is configure McAfee Online Backup to do its thing at a time convenient to you. Otherwise, everything seems to be back to normal.
