Unable to do anything with 2010 McAfee Total Protection

Jump to solution

So, I've been having trouble with the 2010 McAfee Total Protection software.  When I first downloaded it, it was working perfectly.  No problems what so ever came up.  The next day, when I tried to turn on my computer, it began to start up, but it would stay on the loading screen (I have a Dell Inspirion Mini and it's the screen where it says "Windows XP" and the loading bar right under it) and doesn't go any further.  I had to restart my computer and use the "Last Known Good Configuration" or something along those lines to get it back up and running.  At first, I didn't think this was a problem associated with the Total Protection.  But after this happened, my Total Protection software wasn't working at all.  The site advisor that comes along with the software doesn't work anymore.  It stays on the "Unknown" gray color for every site.  I recently tried to run a scan, but an error pops up.

Also, when I try to turn other parts of the software on, (the firewall, spam detector, etc.) they won't turn on.  I turn them on, but once I press the "X" button on the corner, it says that the software is off again.  I decided to uninstall Total Protection and reinstall it.  The download went perfectly normal, but once the computer had to restart, it stayed on the loading page again.  I tried using a system restore, but still nothing worked.  Does anyone have any solution to my problems?  Please don't hesistate to ask any more questions.

Thank you,

Michael

I have the same problem with a Dell Mini 9.  Mcafee 10 would run a scan after initially installing but when I logged off and rebooted Windows XP SP3 would hang at the loading screen.  Tried several things to fix it but have not found a solution.

I recently upgraded to Total Protection.  Security Center shows that my computer is secure.  Scheduled Scan and Automatic Update  aren't working.  They work if I initialize them, but not automatically.  Site Advisor isn't working, and Virtual Technician goes into an endless update mode.

I'm running Windows XP.

Please help.

Did you uninstall via Add/Remove programs and reboot the computer followed by running the MCPR removal tool found at the top of this page under Useful Links and reboot again? If the upgrade was done without following the above steps, there may be some files leftover from the older installation that did not get completely removed therefore causing you to have this issue(s)

Try to run MVT again and see if the problem has corrected itself.

I uninstalled previous Mcafee program and rebooted prior to installing TP.  Tried running VT again just now...same result. I'll try MCPR.   Thanks.

Didn't know about MCPR (seems like that should be included in the installation).  Anyway, followed your suggestion.  Virtual Technician, Automatic Update, and Spam Filter are working.  It will be several days before I know about Scheduled Scan.  Site Advisor works on only 1 of 2 identities.  Any suggestions?   Thanks.

Unfortunately, for BT users of Total Protection this has not been resolved. Has anyone else had success with BTNetprotect Plus?
