I am trying to install McAfee Total Protection (Home version) on a 3rd computer - the operating system on this computer is Vista. I am connected to the Internet (I've tripled checked my connection) but each time I attempt to download I get the error "Internet connection unavailable. We can't download your McAfee software because we're having trouble accessing the Internet." I am able to access other websites so I'm not sure why I am continuing to get this error.
So far, I've tried the McAfee Virtual Assistant and the Online Chat but no luck.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this please send along.

Thanks for the information. I followed all the steps you outlined but unfortunately I'm still receiving the same error "Internet connection unavailable." I'm really at a loss as to what is causing this problem as I can continue to access other websites so I know that my Internet connection is working.

Please run the IERegFix.bat tool to fix common errors with Internet Explorer. The link to the tool is: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/IERegFix.bat
If still no go please try the below IE FIX tool

Try to do a windows update with options updates.
Create a new windows user profile.
Removed the tick mark from the Internet Explorer properties.
Trued to install McAfee.
Run preinstall tool from the below link (Run as Administrator in Vista)
Run the IEFix tool and if still the same let me know the status:
Are you using any other security softwares in the computer.
Check and delete if you have any other security softwares in add/remove programs (or) C:/programs files and common files.
