I wonder if this could be due to McAfee. Any help/trouble shooting advice will be appreciated.

Could be. Open McAfee SecurityCenter and then open Firewall. Look for "Internet Connections for Programs" and expand that.
It takes a while to populate.
Hint: Click Programs to make them re-arrange into alphabetical order, if you wish.
Scroll down to find Spotify and see if playing with its permissions helps.
