I have McAfee Security Centre as PC protection.
Daily a message pops up asking to update McAfee security scan plus....When I then press the toggle to proceed, i get the message 'error initializing updater interface'.
McAfee Securitycenter seems to operate correctly updating automatically.
1. Why is security scan plus installed.
2. Is it necessary while having security centre,
3. If not how to remove it without interfering with securitycenter
It seems not to effect anything else, only irritation is the daily reminder!

Peter’s workaround is a good one to fix the issue, before that you can also check the McAfee security scan plus traces in the C:\ Drive location . If you have the McAfee security scan plus desktop icon then right click on it and go to properties, check the location of the folder – navigate to the location and delete the McAfee security scan plus folders. I hope this could help !
Likely it could be under C:\Program Files or in C:\Program Files X(86)
You got this because there was an option during an adobe or similiar product's install that asked if you wanted to install the Security scan program. A lot of users do not read what pops up so get this or the ask toolbar or chrome or a norton security product installed . So you did er ask for it and no it is not necessary as yopu have the full product so delete it as per the below links.
Thanks for your prompt response.
I run windows 7 and by following the procedure you kindly outline McAfee Security Scan Plus is absent from the list of 'uninstallable programs'.
Itemised is McAfee Security Center and McAfee Virtual Technician.
Perhaps it piggy backed on an add-on?
What i have done is changed browser from Mozilla to Chrome after a 'text enhance' in browser add on advertising 'do da' hijacked both IE and Mozilla.
Dont understand why its absent from uninstallable programs list.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Took your advise, checked show hidden and still absent.
Will get on to support and follow up with a further post.
It could be listed as simply Security Scan Plus or McAfee Security Scan Plus, but I guess you've already thought of that.
The other approach would be to download and install it again from the standalone installer here: http://home.mcafee.com/downloads/free-virus-scan
Then uninstall it. Hopefully that will remove all of it.
If not the other drastic solution would be to uninstall everything McAfee, then run the MCPR cleanup tool, reboot and reinstall from your online account.
Either way, keep your eyes open for optional extra downloads with such things as Adobe products, Java etc. etc. in future as they are offered with so many things these days.
Thanks peter (EX_BRIT),
I have managed to resolve the issue as explained above.
Very much appreciate your time in offering a further suggestion.
I am sure as a last resort your method will have resolved the issue.
