Is there a reason for 98% cpu usage?

I've just recently started having issues where my computer would freeze up suddenly when I would go to open something (new laptop so easily capable of running the program) and took to leaving the task manager open so that I could potentially see what was using so much cpu (ctrl+alt+del wouldn't work while frozen) and found that it was mcafee using between 99 and 96 percent of my cpu for an extended period of time.  I ran Mcafee's Virtual Technician which found nothing wrong, but at this point I've simply left mcafee with below normal priority so that my computer would run normally.  I'm wondering if this is some glitch or if I simply need to call HP to see if my computer is defective.

Re: Is there a reason for 98% cpu usage?

The specific process using the cpu is mcafee on-access scanner which would start whenever I tried to open pretty much any folder or file.  The computer has 3002 MB RAM, Pentium Dual-Core CPU  T4200 @ 2.00GHz, Window Vista Home Premium; and Mcafee is the sole security provider on the computer. Today I haven't had any trouble with Mcafee, however, so maybe the issue resolved itself.
