An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a Service

An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a

service.

Got this error when I tried to disable one of my start up items on msconfig.  Something happend on my computer.  (1) My McAfee would not stay on auto scanning.  I had to go to virtual tech to fix it.  (2) All of my start up items were enabled in startup in msconfig.  I got the message above when I tried to make changes to startup items in msconfig.

Have windows xp sp2

Re: An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a Service

Not knowing what access exactly was denied I can only hazard a guess that 'Access Protection' in McAfee SecurityCenter is preventing it.

Double-click the taskbar icon to open SecurityCenter

Click Navigation (top right)

Click General Settings and Alerts

Click Access Protection to expand and uncheck it then click Apply.

See if that helps.

By the way you should be using XP SP3 as support for SP2 ran out in July 2010.

See THIS link for help.

ExBrit: I will try that tonight, I am at work now.  Do you know why my auto scanning was disabled?  I am concerned about malware.

It's difficult to guess what caused that.  Could have been lots of things, competing software. use of registry cleaners often cause malfunctions, infections are a possibility, even System Restore can cause it if the software isn't updated immediately afterwards.

You should also install SP3 as Windows XP SP2 is not supported by Microsoft hence you must be missing loads of security updates by now.

As a precaution you could run a full scan using the FREE version of THIS tool, update it first.  (Do not use the Pro version even on trial).

Will malewarebytes conflict with McAfee?

This did not work.  Still Can't update msconfig.  I have a trial version of System Mechanic on my computer.  Is this the cause of the problem?

Possibly.  My opinion of registry cleaners is pretty low I'm afraid.  From personal experience long ago I stopped using them as they cause more problems than they are supposed to fix.

You question might be best answered on a Windows User group.

Please update to SP3 a.s.a.p. as basically your system is now unsupported anyway as it stands.

I posted the help link earlier.
