A while back in a piece about Potentially Unwanted Programs and how you get suckered into downloading them I mentioned the use of something called Dark Patterns.

Well, I came across an account of how LinkedIn uses Dark Patterns to get you to give them the contents of your online Address Book so that they can then spam everyone in it with invitations - from you yourself, of course - to join LinkedIn. This is how they grow their user base, but it's the way they try every trick in the book to get those addresses from you, even if you fight them every step of the way. By hook or by crook, LinkedIn wants those email addresses and nothing's gonna stop them trying to get them ...
