McAfee Drive Encryption (DE) 7.1.x and later adds support for self-encrypting drives that support the OPAL standard. To make support easily identifiable for administrators, DE lists support for OPAL drives based on specific makes and models of hardware.
Although DE supports a wide range of operating systems, the combination of DE and OPAL is supported only with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and later. This is due to a Windows driver fix included in SP1 crucial driver fixes that allow these 512e drives to function correctly.
If DE detects an incompatible or unsupported combination of operating system and OPAL drive, it will continue the activation process but use software encryption instead of OPAL.
For systems running UEFI, additional OPAL requirements must be met, including the system being Windows 8 Certified and the drive being an OEM disk shipped with the system. To view a systems Windows certifications, the model can be queried using this site: https://sysdev.microsoft.com/en-us/hardware/lpl/
