Intel Security SNS ProTip for Drive Encryption: Opal and Normal HDD Inside One Computer

Version 1

What happens if I have an Opal and a normal HDD inside the one computer? Will Drive Encryption use the native Opal functionality on the Opal drive and software encryption for the normal HDD?

This configuration is known as a mix-mode environment. A mixed-mode environment occurs when a computer has multiple physical hard drives and those drives are a combination of Opal and standard drives.

Mixed-mode is supported by Drive Encryption. The lowest common denominator is always software encryption. If in doubt, the software encryption functionality will be used to encrypt both the Opal drive and the Normal HDD.
