    What is a SuperDAT?
A SuperDAT is a self-extracting archive (.exe) that contains the most current DAT and Engine files for McAfee Anti-Virus products.

    What does a SuperDAT do?
Running a SuperDAT on your computer will quickly update the DAT files and Scanning Engine.

    What are DAT files?
The DAT files files contain up-to-date virus and malware signatures and other information that McAfee products use to protect your computer against malware and other threats. McAfee releases new DAT files regularly to provide protection against new threats.

    What is a Scan Engine?
The McAfee Scan Engine contains the program logic necessary to

    • Scan files at particular points in time
    • Process and pattern-match virus definitions with data in your files
    • Decrypt and run potentially unwanted code in an emulated environment
    • Apply heuristic techniques to recognize new threats
    • Remove infectious code from legitimate files

Why would I use a SuperDAT package?
A SuperDAT package has several uses. A few examples are:

    • Dial-Up users: A SuperDAT is a single executable file that updates your DATS and Scanning Engine. It does not contain any other product updates, so it usually downloads faster than a full update. After you have downloaded a SuperDAT, your computer does not need to be connected to the Internet to perform the update.

    • Troubleshooting: If you are concerned that you might have a virus and your DAT files are out of date, or the threat is blocking your updates, you can download the SuperDAT on another computer and the use a a CD or USB drive to copy it to your computer.

    • Keeping all your computers at the same update level: If you have multiple computers on a home network, you can use a single SuperDAT on all of them to ensure that they have the same DAT and Engine version. This can also help you keep track of any computers that have update issues.
